Did we meet via Janglo?

Posted by Zvi on 2008-08-24 in JobShuk, rant

It seems that after a year of monitoring Janglo, and enlightening people of the options available for receiving and providing a parnassa to those outside of the Janglo loop, things might just change.

I received a message from the benevolent despot of Janglo, demanding that I stop my "Spamming" ways or he'll be forced to take action against me. We spoke in person, and he persisted that by contacting people who posted on his list, I was a spammer and needed to be dealt with accordingly.

Below is my response:

I believe in honest business, and decent business practices.
I cannot find anywhere on Janglo that says one cannot respond to a post with a suggestion for broadcasting the same message elsewhere. I rarely send an irrelevant message, and when I do, it's because the person mislabeled their message. I do not harvest e-mail addresses.
I also never contact anyone more than once, because that can be annoying. But the single message that I send can easily be deleted if the recipient isn't interested.
That being said, the amount of "thank yous" I receive easily outnumber the "this isn't relevant" messages by about 100 to 1.

I recognize that you're trying to protect your subscriber base, but my intentions are good, and I see no error in my ways. Please indulge me if you can justify your claims that I'm doing something wrong, or make a positive suggestion about how I can inform relevant people about their alternatives.
His response:
Well, I call it spam, and won't tolerate it. You'll also see on
http://www.janglo.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=126&Itemid=115
that we do expressly forbid such actions.
You probably saw that I unsubscribed both jobshuk emails from receiving Janglo emails. I hope that will end all of this behavior for good.

In addition, I would like an email from you agreeing that you will never contact members reagrding your site unless they specifically askfor information about job sites. Until you agree to that, I will also block your user from logging in to the site. If I do not receive that agreement in the next two days, I will also delete all mention of jobshuk from the site and instruct my moderators not to allow anything
from you on Janglo anymore.
I hope you will agree to these terms, and not let this go any further.
Thank you.

I'm not in this business to make enemies, and I don't want to make anyone upset. I suppose that it's in Janglo's rights to run it like a monarchy, but perhaps we can let the people decide.

Is it inappropriate to respond to business ads informing them of more free advertising via JobShuk? Should I stop?
Would it have better if we never met?

I dont see anything wrong with it. Many people use Janglo just for this purpose - to get updates on the latest jobs opps and business related stuff.

However I still think there is a need for an alternative to Janglos business promotion and advertising section.

With the broad spectrum of catagories under the Janglo umbrella and its popularity I cannot believe the hysterical overreaction of the site's owner. If a subscriber views outreach by Jobshuk as spam he need never be troubled a second time.Gratefully, there are delete buttons and spam filters. Think of how many people may be helped . Isn't that what its all about!LIGHTEN UP [stuffed shirt- pompous Brit] JANGLO!!!

Nice of Zvi to publish our private correspondence online. I especially like the part where he calls me a despot.

In any case, Janglo has a very firm policy against contacting Janglo users for purposes unrelated to their inquiries. Over the seven years I've run Janglo, a number of people have had the brilliant idea to promote their sites using auto-responders to Janglo messages, and I've gotten a number of very very angry emails complaining about them. (And yes, I have received complaints about Zvi's email specifically.) This is simply an abuse of the list, and most people understand this. Janglo is always very flexible and accommodating in helping businesses, but we have zero tolerance for this type of thing.

I'm not the only one for whom this is a sore spot. You'll note that craiglist.org has only one line that appears underneath every message on the site:

it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

Its nice that Zvi thinks he is the first person to try this, and that he is being unfairly discriminated against when all he wants to do is selflessly help other people, but there is a bit more to the story.

In the name of reason, I've been interested in hearing "more to the story", but have been answered with only demands instead.

Regardless, Zev (who's no longer nameless) is beating a dead horse, since I agreed yesterday to his terms and will back off. Zev, as agreed, has reinstated my Janglo account, for whatever that's worth.

I love Janglo! I've found more jobs on it than any other site in Israel. All of my friends use it.

As I run a community site as well, I completely agree with Zev on this one though I don't really know neither of your sites. Unsolicited messages that have the exact same pattern are SPAM. If the site's manager doesn't handle spammers properly, non-spammers would be discouraged to keep using his site.

BTW: I just landed here due to you using Symfony :)
